Teambuilding
Companies need high-performing employees and highly efficient teams. Take a one or two-day time-out with your team to eliminate disagreement, identify areas of improvement potential and optimize cooperation!
There are different reasons for a teambuilding session, such as taking over a new team, integrating new employees, changing fundamental objectives and tasks, or difficulties in communication.
As a manager and leader, one of your core tasks is to make your team successful!
On the one hand teambuilding concerns topics on an objective level, such as task completion and results orientation, while on the other it also concerns aspects on the relationship level, such as taking responsibility and establishing a good communication culture.
The conceptual design of a Teambuilding Workshop is orientated towards the Tuckman Model. In its original form, this establishes 4 consecutive development steps for groups − see below. The 5th phase was added by Tuckman later and is not relevant to all teams: it concerns groups who have worked together on an assignment and whose members then go their separate ways after the assignment has been completed, which is often the case in project work.
- Forming - the exploration and testing phase (contact)
- Storming - the dispute phase (conflict)
- Norming - the agreement phase (contract)
- Performing - the work and performance phase (cooperation)
- Adjourning - the solution phase.
Here, it is key to understand team development not merely as a short-term issue but rather as an ongoing process. A workshop designed to respond to the needs of your team is an excellent way to get the ball rolling.
When is a team successful?
A team is successful when its combined effort produces results that are greater than the effort contributed by its individual members – that is, when 1 + 1 > 2. The team members’ skills and abilities then complement each other, the members tackle tasks together and share responsibility for these. The team spirit is characterized by a strong feeling of togetherness and criticism is expressed constructively.
What added value does teambuilding provide?
Teambuilding promotes team-internal collaboration and thus raises performance, motivation and identification with the company. This is a measure that benefits both employees and their managers equally.
